On January 1, 1798, Canfield Township was settled by Connecticut settlers as a part of the Western Reserve and was named after the largest landowner at the time, Judson Canfield. On March 1, 1846, Mahoning County was formed with Canfield as the County Seat until 1876. Mahoning is an Indian word meaning "The Salt Licks" or "at the Salt Licks".. The original court house building still stands at the head of the village green toward which the bank faces. The "green" is still the center of the community where our markets, parades, picnics and band concerts are held.

New inventions included the induction motor, Edison's Kinetoscope, celluloid film, the gasoline automobile and monotype for printing. Free mail delivery became available in larger towns. Coins in circulation included the "45", "225" and bronze Indian head "483" cents minted that year. Assets of the nation's 6,170 banks totaled $5.2 billion at a time when Federal Government expenditures reached $267.9 million and the Federal Debt was $1.5 billion.

Farmers was founded and chartered February 19, 1887. The original land, building, furniture and safe were purchased for $3,100 on the property where the current building stands, by a group of local businessmen and farmers to serve their growing township. Alexander Dickson, one of the founders of the bank, was named its first president at the charter meeting. Mr. Dickson was a teacher, a captain in the Civil War and a former Treasurer of Mahoning County. On the opening day of the bank, a tavern keeper, barber, school master, two tailors and a housewife deposited a total of $170. The bank was a success and Mr. Dickson was proud of it.

In 2007, Farmers celebrated its 120th birthday.  Today, Farmers remains an independent community bank with 16 offices located in three counties in Ohio: Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana.
